Lessons Learned: My Journey with a Service Dog at University
You never know what college will throw at you—late-night study sessions, questionable dining hall food… and if you're lucky, a four-legged classmate. Here's what I’ve learned about navigating college life with my service dog, Max.
1. Was it hard bringing a service dog to college?
Honestly? It was shockingly easy.
Campus was super accommodating—professors were kind, and administration worked with me. The only hiccup has been the campus buses. They’re crowded and a little unsafe for a dog, but unfortunately, I don’t have another option right now.
2. How did Max help you manage school stress?
Classes can be overwhelming, especially finals. Having Max around helps ground me—literally.
He’s someone I care for, rely on, and he supports me right back. Since my campus is very walk-heavy, he also helps me get around when my mobility struggles flare up.
Bonus? When he’s off duty, he makes it easier to meet people. Everyone loves saying hi to him!
3. What was your toughest moment on campus?
There was one frustrating day that stood out. I was at dance practice, and a gym staff member came in—not once, but three times—questioning why Max was there. The third time, he even tried to kick us out (he failed).
What made it worse was that I had already spoken with the facility directors, they were totally on board, and I’d been practicing there with Max for months without issue.
That moment made me realize: even on a supportive campus, someone will always challenge you. It was a good reminder to stay prepared, document everything, and know my rights—because sometimes, even when you do everything right, someone else doesn’t.
4. How do you balance his needs with your schedule?
Luckily, my schedule works in our favor.
I walk from class to class, so Max gets frequent breaks—every couple of hours. He naps through lectures (sometimes too well—he’s been caught dreaming loudly!).
We also play during downtime. Because of the short class blocks, he actually gets more exercise than people expect.
5. What kind of documentation did you need?
Surprisingly, there wasn’t any formal paperwork.
I had contacted the student disability office, housing, and my care providers to get everything cleared—but no one needed me to fill anything out.
That’s why I always say: get your documentation anyway. I saved every email, just in case anyone ever questions me.
6. Do your professors and classmates understand?
They’ve been awesome.
Everyone I’ve met has been respectful and understanding. I’ve made sure to email each professor ahead of the semester, so they know what to expect and we can make appropriate arrangements.
7. How does Max support you beyond mobility?
When I’m overstimulated or overwhelmed, Max is a huge help.
He grounds me emotionally and physically, helping me calm down and feel safer. Whether it's a crowded event or a stressful class, he’s always in my corner.
What I’ve Learned
Having Max by my side at college has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. He’s helped me navigate physical and emotional challenges, meet new people, and even find my footing in a new environment. I’ve learned that being prepared—knowing your rights, communicating clearly, and staying flexible—makes all the difference.
College with a service dog isn't always easy, but it’s absolutely doable. With the right tools and mindset, it can even be empowering.
If you're thinking about bringing a service dog to college, or you're already on that path, I hope my story gives you a bit of clarity—or at least reassurance that you're not alone in it.
